Trick time with the age-defying effects of a facelift and look as young as you feel. As you age, your skin and the soft tissue of the face loosens and begins to sag, under your chin and around your neck. Along with this, facial fat slackens and wrinkles form as the skin loses its plump, fresh appearance. A full facelift tightens muscles, removes excess fat and smooths out the skin, leaving your face looking fresher, younger and smoother.

The procedure

The procedure takes 2 to 4 hours and is usually done under general anaesthetic. You may be required to stay over in hospital, depending on whether or not you have other procedures done at the same time.

You can return to work after 10 to 14 days, and may resume strenuous activity after two weeks.

Possible side effects and complications

Side effects and complications can include temporary bruising, swelling, numbness and tenderness of the skin, as well as a feeling of tightness in the skin. The bruising should begin to disappear after 7 to 10 days.

Men who have facelifts might have a permanent need to shave behind their ears, if the skin re-positioned there was originally part of their beard-growing area.

In rare instances, temporary or permanent nerve injury could occur and lead to numbness and weakness of facial muscles. Further possible complications include the possibility of infection, bleeding, hematoma and of excess scarring.
